Choosing your pregnancy vitamins
If you are trying for a baby or have just seen a positive test, you very likely already know about folic acid and vitamin D, and you may be wondering what a prenatal adds on top. Our Prenatal is three capsules a day and gathers those together with more besides: 800 micrograms of folate as methylfolate, iron as ferrous bisglycinate, iodine, choline and vitamin D, in one thing to remember each day.
If you want to understand it properly before you start, there is a full pregnancy vitamins guide and a closer look at folate and folic acid. And if you are still at the trying stage, our read on supplements while trying to conceive is written for exactly that moment.
For after the birth, Postnatal carries on in the same way, three capsules a day with folate as methylfolate, made for the weeks after your baby arrives and while you are breastfeeding. The capsules can be opened and stirred into food on the days swallowing them is the last thing you feel like, and there is a postnatal vitamins guide for when to make the switch.
If it is easier to have the whole stretch handled in one go, we also keep a pregnancy vitamins routine that sets it out for you. Whatever you choose, do let your midwife know what you are taking, so they have the full picture.

Questions people ask
Which one do I need?
The Prenatal is for trying for a baby and all through pregnancy. The Postnatal is for after the birth and while breastfeeding. Your midwife or GP can help with timing.
What if capsules feel like too much?
Both can be opened and the powder stirred into food or a drink. Three capsules a day, with a meal, is the serving.
Should I tell my midwife?
Yes, please let your midwife or GP know what you're taking. Bring the label or the product page so they can see exactly what's inside.
Which vitamins do you need while pregnant?
Folic acid and vitamin D are the two most often singled out in early pregnancy, and a prenatal brings those together with iron, iodine and choline in one daily routine.
Why stop folic acid at 12 weeks?
The NHS advises taking folic acid up to 12 weeks, which is why that date comes up. Many women simply carry on with a prenatal after that point, since it keeps folate and the rest in one place.
When should I switch to a postnatal?
Once your baby has arrived. Postnatal is made for the weeks after the birth and while you are breastfeeding, so most people move across from the prenatal around then.
